Middlesex
Ladies off to successful start
On
Sunday 28th September 2008, Middlesex Ladies travelled
to Hove to participate in the first leg of the London
South and South East RFUW Inter-County Tournament. Having
won the inaugural cup last season, the weight of expectation
stands firmly on Middlesex shoulders, and the squad
were eager to prove their worth.
Middlesex
faced Sussex in the first of the pool games. The preparation
and dedication at the county training sessions was evident,
and they were rewarded in the 11th minute as fly-half
Arabella Gaunt opened Middlesex’s scoresheet.
Two tries followed in the first half, with a further
three in the second half.
Full
time score:
Middlesex 36 - Sussex 0
Tries: Gaunt, Ahweyyu , Binfor (2), Van Shalkwyk, Weymar
Conv: Gaunt (2)
Hertfordshire,
new to the county competition this season, were the
opponents in the second of the pool games. Again Middlesex
started the game strongly, with a try from captain,
Caroline Wolfendale, in the 2nd minute. Hertfordshire
rallied, and their strong defence prevented any more
tries in the first half. However, the strength and depth
of the Middlesex squad became clear in the second half,
as they crossed the try line a further three times.
Full
time score:
Middlesex 24 - Hertfordshire 0
Tries: Wolfendale, Donnelly, Van Shalwyk (2)
Conv: Cormican, Gaunt
Coach,
John Porter-Griffiths, was impressed by the squad’s
performance – ‘Every one of the players
gave maximum effort to secure two well-deserved wins.
However, we cannot afford to become complacent, and
the ladies will need to commit hard to training to ensure
that Middlesex progresses to the final.’ Middlesex
players of the day were Lucy Ross-Mackenzie (forwards)
and Ciska Van Shalwyk (backs).
Having
won both of their games in the pool competition, the
ladies now progress to the knock-out stages. They will
face Kent, runners-up in last year’s competition,
on October 19th 2008, venue tbc.
