THANKS TO ORPINGTON RUGBY CLUB Posted 02/02/06

With flooded and waterlogged pitches thoughout Kent and Susex it looked as if the South East Senior Regional Trails would face further cancellation and throw the progamme into chaos. But at the 11th hour, Orpington RFC came to the rescue in spectacular style, not only supplying a good quality pitch but also a very warm welcome in the clubhouse. A steady supply of large mugs of tea always keeps spirits up and the offer of food an added bonus. Nothing was too much trouble for this club. Only recently Orpington RFC's clubhouse was a victim of arson but the dedicated teamwork of players, members, commitee and staff alike saw the club rise, like a Phoenix from the flames; and it's this teamwork that gives Orpington the edge on hospitality and willingness to help.
The trials were successful with an excellent coaching session taken by Ian Davies, Gerry Mills and Duncan Simpson. Thanks also to the players for their co-operation and making the hastily revised journey.
Huge thanks to Mark, Lynne and Gary for their sterling efforts - we look forward to visiting again soon!

County 4-way Tournament
Sunday 21st November 2004

The day started cold, but thankfully dry for what promised to be an exciting display of rugby. Surrey, Hampshire, Kent and Sussex turned up to an already buzzing Guilford Rugby Club. Between the four Counties, the tournament fielded an impressive 11 sides, special mention to Sussex for managing to field an A and B squad for both U14s and U17s.

Sussex U17 B squad kicked the tournament off with a full game against Kent U17 B squad, and this tightly contested game ended in a 10-all draw. Hopefully we’ll see some of these girls work they way in to the A-squad in next year’s tournament.

The U14s competed in a round robin tournament, each team getting four 20-minute games. The rugby was competitive and flowing, with some very impressive passages of play. Each team were playing to win, but the fair play on the pitches was notable. Despite a valiant effort by Surrey, their loss in their first game against Hampshire put them in second place behind the unbeaten Southerners. The full U14 results were as follows:

Surrey 0 - Hampshire 10 Kent 0 – Sussex A 15
Surrey 41 - Kent 0 Hampshire 36 – Sussex B 0
Surrey 45 - Sussex B 0 Hampshire 7 – Sussex A 0
Surrey 32 - Sussex A 0 Kent 17 – Sussex B 0
Sussex A 12 – Sussex B 0 Hampshire 31 – Kent 0

Final Placings:
1 Hampshire
2 Surrey
3 Sussex A
4 Kent
5 Sussex B

The U17s competed in three 20-minute matches each, and the standard of rugby was impressive to say the least. There were no runaway wins, and the competition was fierce. Surrey made the fatal mistake of under-estimating the Hampshire squad after their history of victories, and consequently Hampshire stepped up the pace, and secured a key victory over the hosts. The full U17 results were as follows:

Surrey 12 – Kent 0
Hampshire 5 – Sussex 0
Surrey 0 – Hampshire 8
Kent 10 – Sussex 0
Surrey 12 – Sussex 0
Hampshire 5 – Kent 0

Final Placings:
1 Hampshire
2 Surrey
3 Kent
4 Sussex

I would like to say thank you to all the Counties for making the effort to travel to Guildford for the day, and especially to the referees who gave up their time to officiate during the tournament.

Surrey Girls U14s 19 Hampshire Girls U14s 20
24 October 2004 - by Hampshire WRFU
In a close and thrilling match in Aldershot, the Hampshire Under 14's girls narrowly beat a very useful Surrey side.
The Surrey backs had the edge throughout the game and when their right wing scored under the posts in the first few minutes it looked as if the Hampshire girls were in for a long afternoon. The try was converted to give Surrey a 12-0 lead. Although the Surrey backs had some awesome pace, the Hampshire side tackled well and their forwards began to dominate in both the rucks and the mauls. A period of continual pressure on the Surrey line, the Hampshire lock forward Poppy Cleall crashed over to bring the score back to 7-5 and shortly after, her twin sister and inside centre Bryony Cleall took a good inside pass from fly half Charlotte Benson to score a well worked try. Hampshire conceded a further try before half time, which meant that they were trailing 12-10 at the break.
Hampshire started the second half looking the much stronger team and played some very attractive rugby. This resulted in Poppy Cleall scoring a further two tries to give her a hat trick on her Hampshire debut. With a 12-20 lead Hampshire looked as if they were home and dry, but a late converted try by Surrey brought the score back to 19-20. This led to an agonising last five minutes for the Hampshire side, but they kept their heads and tackled well to secure their victory.
After the game the Hampshire Coach Vernon Young said, "We had a difficult first ten minutes today, but I was very pleased with the way that our team pulled together in their first game. The squad had only had two training sessions before the game and you could see their team work develop as the game progressed". He added, "I was pleased with the performance of the whole squad and was particularly pleased with the performances of Katie Pearce, Jenny Forbes and Abbie Guy".

24 October 2004 - by Hampshire WRFU
This was a very closely contested match in which both teams played some excellent rugby. It was the Surrey side that took the lead early on in the game after applying some good pressure from the kick off.
Hampshire then settled down and scored an excellent try through the forwards with Vicky Cornborough running through several players to score under the posts. This was converted by Fiona Pocock to bring the score to 5-7. Surrey then scored and converted just before half time to make the score 12-7.
Hampshire came out strong in the second half but could not hold the superb attacking backs of surrey, who scored two tries early in the second half to make the score 7-24. With ten minutes to go the Hampshire team pulled together and played some of their best rugby of the game. Vicky Cornbourgh scored another try, which was converted by Fiona Pocock. This score was closely followed by a well worked move resulting in a try by Morgan Holmes, which bought the score to a very respectable 24-17. Surrey held on to secure the win.
After the game coach John Atkins said ‘ I was very please with the way the team stuck at it and never gave up. We played some of our best rugby in the last ten minutes of the game. I was particular pleased with the performances of Hannah Robbins and Alison Burnett our forward and Back of the match’.

Hampshire Girls Win Regional Rugby Festival by Hampshire WRFU
28 Nov 2004
Both the Hampshire U17 and U14 girls rugby squads were victorious this weekend at the RFUW Regional Festival held at Guildford Rugby Club. The four counties that make up the South East region were there, Kent, Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire.

In both age groups the Hampshire girls played some of their best rugby of the season and both teams came away unbeaten and with out conceding a point! The Under 14’s beat Surrey in their opening game by 10 points to nil, with both tries being scored by their inside centre Bryony Cleall.

They then went on to beat the Sussex “B” team by 36 points to nil with tries from Bryony Cleall (2), Abi Guy, Bethany Lowen, Katie Pearce and Katie Sage. Jasmine Clark also kicked 3 conversions. The Under 14’s then faced their toughest game against the Sussex “A” team and won by 7 points to nil. Their try was scored by their wing three quarter Emma Smith and Bryony Cleall kicked the conversion. In their final game they beat Kent by 31 points to nil with tries from Jasmine Clark, Katie Pearce, Katie Pryce, Katie Sage and Emma Smith. Bryony Cleall also kicked three conversions.

In the Under 17s first game they beat Sussex by 5 points to nil, the try was a great forwards effort scored by prop Vicky Cornborough. They then went on to beat Surrey 8 points to 0 in a match they were determined to win. Scrum Half Fiona Pocock charged down a kick in Surreys 22 and collected the ball and ran over for a try. Fiona also kicked a superb penalty with two minutes to go. The last game of the festival was against Kent and was the most competitive. Hampshire defended superbly throughout the game and scored late in the second half through hooker Natalie Cambell. Fiona Pocock converted and the final score was Hampshire 7 Kent 0.

MAZDA KENT FESTIVAL OF GIRLS RUGBY - 2005

The festival, held on Sunday 16 January, was very successful. All the players, coaches, parents and officials enjoyed the experience and had a good day.
87 girls aged between 11 and 17 were involved, from 10 clubs across Kent. Ashford, Bexley, Canterbury, Cranbrook, Deal, Folkestone, Medway, Orpington, Swale, Thanet.
The U14s players split into East and West Kent and played one match. East Kent were the Cup Winners and West Kent the runners up.
The under 17s competed in a league structure, with 5 teams; games of 7 minutes each way.
The standard was the highest yet, the girls exhibited true rugby spirit and good skills too. A local PE teacher said ‘the way the young women controlled the phases, communicated and organised their defence could have been a lesson to our first team’.
Tackling and defence were very good and teams showed great promise for the future for Kent Women’s rugby.
Thanet (including a Deal guest) were undefeated wining all 4 matches, 12-0, 12-0, 17-0 and 26-7, amassing 12 points, so adding the Mazda Kent Cup to the Thanet trophy cabinet.
Orpington and Medway won 2 and lost 2 each, but Orpington were deemed cup runners up as they only had 22 scored against them. Medway, with 29 points against, took the Plate trophy.
Cranbrook and Ashford/Canterbury lost 3 and won one each, but Cranbrook took the Plate runners up due to lower scores scored against them – another testament to good defence.
Gerry Morris, Kent Girls Chairman, thanked TWRUFC very much for hosting the competition, Mazda Motors for sponsoring the event and the referees, without whom the festival could not happen. He made special mention of Alan Stoner, who came to referee one match for an hour, but stayed until the final whistle due to a referee shortage. He really put the girls at ease, had an excellent manner and added to the enjoyment of all. Thanks also went to St John, who dealt with a couple of minor strains.

Future Stars Light up Beckenham
RFUW Regional Youth Tournament – Beckenham RFC – Sunday 20th March

The RFUW Regional Youth Programme switched from training and development to competition on Sunday 20th March. Over 200 girls playing in teams from the London & South East region and the East region arrived at Beckenham RFC to put their skills to the test. The London & South East (LonSE) region is split into three areas to cater for the vast size of the region and the number of girls playing.

In the U14 competition, LonSE (South) were somewhat ruthless in completing a ‘Grand Slam’. The unbeaten team scored an impressive 8 tries throughout the course of the day, 5 of which were converted (63% success rate). Being the first season in this age-banding, the quality of rugby at this level is something to be excited about – the future is looking very bright.

The U17s provided the many spectators with an exciting range of skills, passion and fierce determination. It was evident from the start that there would be more than a few bruising encounters. The first match between LonSE (East) and East ended with East winning 7-5. Following this game, LonSE (North) took on a strong LonSE (South) team. LonSE (South) dominated and came out 17 -5 winners. The points table looked fairly tight right until the penultimate match when East region squeezed a 5 – 0 win over LonSE (South). The final match of the day was the battle for second place. LonSe (South) were obviously keen to avenge their defeat to East, and came out 24 – 5 winners over neighbours LonSE (East).

This tournament was a great showcase for the standard of girl’s rugby, and credit must go to the County setups which are so important in bringing the girls to Regionals and starting them on the road to England honours.

Beckenham RFC are in the process of establishing a youth setup to support their women’s section and were more than happy to host the RFUW Regional tournament. The superb clubhouse, which was part-funded by Sport England Lottery money, more than catered for the 200 players and their supporters. Regional Programme Manager and Tournament Organiser, Clare Cooper said, “Beckenham RFC has been fantastic from start to finish. The support from club members Des Walsh and Stuart Tormey, throughout the organisation process resulted in the smooth running of the event on the day. All teams, their staff and parents were made to feel welcome, and they thoroughly enjoyed the facilities, not to mention the BBQ and bacon sandwiches!”

The RFUW Regional Programme is in its second year and is continuing to develop and improve standards across the board. Volunteers have been appointed by RFUW, and have worked with commitment and enthusiasm throughout the programme, delivering a positive rugby experience for all involved.

Since trials in January the players have attended 3 training sessions and have been eagerly awaiting the opportunity for competition. The U17’s will travel to Derby RFC on 24th April to play in the Regional Festival, which will involve all 9 regions. Similarly, the 9 regions will meet at Rugby on 2nd May for the U14 Regional Festival. Sport England Press Release. Touchline Press Release.

Senior Regional Derby Match - Lon SE North 0 - Lon SE South 10

The first round of the competitive element of the Senior Regional Programme kicked off this weekend. As anticipated, this was a closely fought match between the region's top senior players, from 20 different clubs. The battle was on for a place in the top half of the draw to go through to a Regional Cup Final, to be held on 14th May as a curtain-raiser to England v South Africa at Imber Court.

It was the Tale of Two Vicki's, a try before half time for the South from Vicki Hudspeth was just reward for the possession and territory advantage, North would have been pleased to have held the South out for as long as they did. In the second half, South maintained their dominance, despite losing their fly-half Sara Company to injury. The forward pack took the game to the North, which set a sound platform for the backs to run off. South capitalised on their dominance up front and Full-back Vicki Dibdin used the space out wide to seal the game.

In the next round of the Senior competition, South travel to Lichfield to play East Midlands, whilst the North go on to a 3-way tie at Evesham RFC, playing two shortened matches against South West and North West.

In the other matches, Yorkshire play West Midlands and North East play East region.
